A massive earthquake in Taiwan has rocked the island nation, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 1,000. By midday on Wednesday April 3, dozens of people were still trapped in debris as rescue operations got underway. Buildings lay toppled across Hualien County, thousands of homes were without power and major highways closed down. Although Taiwan experiences frequent earthquakes, the 7.4 magnitude of this one came as a surprise.
The extent of the damage is still being measured, but recovery will be long and difficult. Many people will be left homeless and businesses will struggle to get back on their feet, while proper medical and food aid will remain critical for some time.
