Global Food Crisis

by Compassion International

The crisis continues to be caused by the compounding factors of the war in Ukraine, lingering impacts from COVID-19, inflation rate, conflict/insecurity, and weather/climate extremes. The World Food Program is estimating that there are +375M people facing high levels of food insecurity in 2023 . That figure was 135M prior the pandemic and hit 250M during the pandemic. Food price inflation rates remain high, showing most low and middle-income countries with inflation rates higher than 5% .

But that’s not the end of the story. Compassion’s response to the food security crisis is two-fold, meeting children and families’ urgent nutrition needs now while working towards a sustainable solution to help stop hunger. Local partners will:
1) Respond, by providing immediate food packages and/or unconditional cash transfers to households deemed vulnerable to food insecurity. This includes children and families in Compassion’s program, local church partner staff, pastors, and community members.
2) Prevent, through strategic initiatives that aim to help vulnerable households build resilience against these crises. This includes long-term food security strategies such as:
a) Distributing seeds, fertilizer, livestock, and training on how to build and maintain home gardens and small-scale farms; b) Implementing interventions like income generation activities, vocational training, and micro-finance savings groups which also promote long-term food security
